What is "Pressure-Gradient Microphone"?

Pressure-Gradient Microphone
A microphone in which both sides of the diaphragm are exposed to sound, and the microphone is therefore responsive to the pressure differential (gradient) between the two sides of the membrane. The directionality of microphones is controlled by the amount of sound entering the backside. The extremes are full access to the back (figure-of-eight) or fully closed-back (omnidirectional).

DIRECTIONAL VS. OMNIDIRECTIONAL MICROPHONES

Many engineers are afraid of using omnidirectional microphones in a multi microphone setup with several musicians or sound sources. "Leakage" seems to be the buzzword that is often heard in such situations and, without even trying anything else, directional mics are by habit chosen.
